2018 Reflections & 2019 Resolutions

To say that 2018 was the most challenging year of my life thus far would be an understatement. Let me put out a disclaimer right now--I know I am very fortunate and my struggles are INCREDIBLY small in the grand scheme of things but in my 29 years, 2018 was a tougher one.

The year started out rocky with my company that I had been with almost 4 years being acquired by another. I moved into a new role with the new company and had no idea how that was going to go. After getting adjusted to that change, everything was shaken up yet again with the news that Steven was offered the opportunity of a lifetime in Boston. Within a couple of months we picked up our lives, put half of our house in storage (aka my parent's basement) and moved to New England in July.

The city was/is definitely picturesque especially while the weather was averaging 70 degrees and sunny with no humidity but the adjustment was (and still is) hard. Going from living in a house in the most suburban of suburbs to living in an apartment just three transit stops away from downtown Boston was definitely a lifestyle change. Aside from that, being 9 hours away from my parents and almost 16 hours away from Steven's family was an even bigger change.

I went from having a great team of co-workers and friends at work to miserably working from home with no human interaction to finally deciding to give up my familiar job for something new and exciting in the city that would get me out of our apartment. Basically 2018 was filled with life change after life change.

If I were to sum it up in one phrase it would be "Don't get too comfortable."

Well that definitely sounds like a lot of complaining but don't get me wrong, 2018 was a great year. As hard as it has been, I think the change of pace was necessary. It got me, the most routine-driven person ever, to get out of my routine and get out of my comfort zone. It has challenged me emotionally and intellectually, and no matter where we end up after this, I will always remember 2018 as a pivotal year in my life. It was also a GREAT year for Steven. He completed his PhD program and all of that hard work paid off when he was offered a fellowship with Mass General and Harvard. To say that I am proud, would also be an incredible understatement.

So what now? Where will 2019 take the Roberts family?

Honestly...I don't know. I know that we have at least one more year left in Boston and at the end of the year we don't know if we will stay or pick up and move on to a new location. While it's kind of unsettling for me to not know exactly where we will be "growing our roots" I'm just trying to stay focused on the journey and the "adventure" of living in this new, unfamiliar city. If you haven't read this post already by Kathleen, from Carrie Bradshaw Lied, I highly recommend! Her situation is almost identical to mine so it really spoke to me but I think it's an important message for everyone.

Things that I do know about 2019...
--We will FINALLY be traveling more in 2019. With Steven finally being done with school and working a somewhat more "normal" schedule that actually allows for vacation time, we're hoping to get a few good trips under our belt this year. Right now we're in the process of booking a trip for our 2 year wedding anniversary in April/May. We're deciding between a trip to Ireland, a combo trip of London/Scotland, or Paris & the South of France. I'm also hoping to do even more local trips to different New England towns. There is so much within driving distance from Boston and we are so excited to continue exploring. We'll likely be making more regular trips to the Cape and I'm also hoping that in fall/winter we can go somewhere tropical like the Bahamas or Mexico.
--My career is going to be a huge focus this year. I started my new job in November with a great team and a great company. It's an amazing opportunity all around to be more strategic and to hopefully make big impacts at an organization.
--I'm going to continue to step out of my comfort zone whether that be exploring new places, trying new things, and meeting new people. I want to take advantage of this "personal growth opportunity."
--I'm going to continue with the blog and I really want to continue to focus on documenting the things we're doing and experiencing in Boston. It has been so fun to look back at all of the fun things we've done since we moved here and I hope y'all have enjoyed following along.
--We want to hike more. I know that may sound like a stupid resolution but we enjoy being out in nature so much and Toby (our fur baby) LOVES it too.
--I really want to save up for a new camera and enroll in some photography classes. From the blog, I've learned that I really enjoy the photography aspect and want to learn more!
--One of the biggest goals for 2019 (which may end up being pushed to 2020 depending) is starting the process of buying our first home. We have been saving and have been feverishly flipping through Zillow and Realtor.com but we're not fully ready to commit to staying in Boston yet. If we decide to leave Boston after Steven's fellowship, we won't be buying until 2020 but if we decide to stay, we hopefully will find something in 2019. Regardless, we know we want to buy soonish so we at least want to meet with a lender to see what our options are and to get their advice!

I hope y'all enjoyed this post--sorry it was such a long one! Thank you so much for continuing to read. I appreciate every one of you and my little corner of the internet so much!

Gift Guide - For the Last Minute Shopper

Happy Thursday friends! This might be my very first Thursday post in the history of Rosy Outlook. My reason for posting a day early is that for many retailers, this is the last day that you can order online and still receive the items on or before Christmas Eve. If you're like me, I really prefer to do most of my Christmas shopping online if possible but I did want to select items for this post that you could also find somewhat easily in store. Even if you can't pick up these exact items at a store near you, you should definitely be able to find something similar!

I think I mentioned this in my last post but we leave for Maryland tomorrow so I will be taking all of next week off from blogging to spend time with family and friends. I hope y'all have enjoyed my 2018 gift guides and I will see you after the holidays! Happy holidays!

Happy Wednesday friends! I hope you're having a great week so far. I'm really just trying to get things wrapped up before we leave on Friday to go back home! Unfortunately, the weather/our schedule didn't really permit for an outfit shoot this weekend but I thought it would be fun to share some cozy pieces that I'm OBSESSED with right now because I think I found some good ones! The timing is great because a lot of them are marked down and would make great gifts.

Coat, Beanie
Pullover (OBSESSED--I  bought it in 2 other colors), Beanie, Leggings
Beanie, Scarf, Similar Jacket, Boots
Cardigan, Beanie, Leggings, Boots
I have one more gift guide on Friday and then after that I plan to take next week off from blogging to enjoy my brief time visiting family and friends! If I'm not able to get a post up on Wednesday, Annessa will still be hosting our link-up so make sure to stop by and still join in!

Gift Guide 2018 - For Fitness

Happy Monday loves! I hope you had a great weekend. Ours was nice but felt really brief. We got A LOT done especially Christmas shopping so that was great! I think I only have one more gift left to buy which is pretty good compared to other years. I think making these gift guides is really helping to motivate me!

Today's gift guide is for the super active people in your life. I personally would love to receive any of these gifts! I have Airpods on my list for the gym and also to wear while I'm commuting into work! I also LOVE this Adidas backpack. It's a great gender-neutral gift and would make an awesome gym bag or just an every day backpack for a student or traveler.

I have one more gift guide left for the season coming out on Friday because I think next week I'll likely be taking the whole week off from blogging. I hope y'all have been enjoying my gift picks!

Gift Guide 2018 - For Comfort

Happy Friday friends! Hope you had a great week and have some fun weekend plans ahead. I'm actually doing brunch with a new blogger friend of mine Saturday morning in Concord and then spending the rest of the weekend finishing up Christmas shopping! I looked at the calendar and couldn't believe that we're leaving for MD next Friday. December has just FLOWN by.

Today's gift guide is for anyone in your life that loves lounging or being cozy! And I mean...isn't that all of us?! I personally want almost all of these items for myself--especially the Barefoot Dreams cardi and the festive, personalized mug. These would all truly make great, luxurious (without an insane price tag) gifts. Below is a reminder of the schedule for the rest of my 2018 gift guides:

Olive Coatigan + FF Link-Up!

Coatigan: Loft, Tee: BP, Jeans: Madewell, OTK Boots: Steve Madden (old, identical here), Hat: Express
Happy Wednesday y'all! I'm sorry that I missed my Monday post. This is just a busy time of year but I'll definitely be sticking to the gift guide schedule I mentioned in my last post! I am excited because we're officially going home for Christmas so that will be nice. We haven't been back to MD/VA since we moved to Boston in July. Part of me is nervous about going home because I always get worried I'll be more homesick after visiting but who knows!

This coatigan is SO cozy and comfortable. It's definitely the perfect item to just throw on over a tee and leggings when you're running errands on the weekend or you can dress it up a little more like I did here! I'm obsessed with the olive color but I do believe it also comes in grey.

Gift Guide 2018 - For Hosting

Happy Friday friends! 'Tis the season of gift-giving which means I'll be sharing my usual gift guides once or twice a week throughout the month of December. This year I wanted to provide a little more structure to the guides by breaking them into more specific categories! I also wanted to give y'all (and myself) a schedule because I know that holiday shopping can be SO chaotic.

Kicking things off with our first guide, for hosting! These would be great gifts for family or friends that love entertaining but they would also be a hit at a work holiday party or if you need an idea for your co-worker. I feel like anyone would enjoy receiving these pieces because they're not only useful, but they're so unique and festive! Williams Sonoma is one of my FAVORITE places to find Christmas gifts. Just walking into their store I immediately feel the Christmas spirit!

1 Sweater 2 Ways + FF Link-Up!

Sweater: Nordstrom, Tee: BP, Jeans: J. Crew, Boots: Goodnight Macaroon, Beanie: H&M, Bag: Gucci
Happy Wednesday loves! Hope you're having a great week so far. Mine has definitely been busy as the new job is ramping up but I'm loving it! Y'all, I feel like I'm having a total mental block with Christmas gift ideas this year. I'm hoping once I start doing my gift guides every Friday (starting this week) it will start sparking some ideas on what to buy family and friends but I'm really struggling to come up with anything "creative." Any suggestions would be appreciated!

....however this sweater is one thing that I do think would make a GREAT gift! I love that you can wear it two ways so it's basically like a two-in-one gift. Both ways look gorgeous and it's such a cozy piece for this time of year! Also, I know these boots are SUPER popular all over the 'gram and I'm thinking about doing a separate review post on them. I bought these and another pair of black OTK boots by a different brand and I thought I could talk about both. Let me know if that's something you would want to see!

Our 5 Favorite Boston Restaurants For Date Night (So Far...)

Happy Monday friends! Hope you had a great weekend. I'm just going to jump right into today's post since it's going to be a long one. I'll preface this post by stating that we've only been living in Boston for 5 months so it's probably a LITTLE soon to recap some of my favorite restaurants but there are so many that became FAST favorites (and some we probably won't be visiting again) and were recommended by several friends and family members. We also were trying a new restaurant (or two) every single weekend and still are trying to despite the colder weather! I'll definitely do an updated post after we have been here longer but for now these are our current favorites for date night:

1.) Coppa (South End)

This was one of the very first restaurants we tried when we moved to Boston! It was a recommendation from a few of our friends and it did NOT disappoint. Even though it was one of the first and we have yet to be back, it has left a lasting impression! It's a small Italian restaurant with limited seating so I definitely recommend making a reservation but we just fell in love with the little neighborhood this restaurant is tucked away in the South End. I highly recommend their meatball appetizer--all of the food was good but that was our favorite!

2.) Lolita's (Fort Point--there's also a location in Back Bay)

This restaurant we have probably frequented the most of all on the list. We have taken a few of our visiting friends here--I feel like it's the perfect Friday night dinner/drink spot! The decor is REALLY cool and it definitely seems like the bar is pretty popular later in the evening. If you go during the summer, they have an outdoor seating area that's right on the water! It's pretty much all small plates and our personal favorite item to order are the patatas bravas.

3.) Terra (Bay Bay--Prudential Center)

This is another one we've been to at least twice. It's located in Eataly which is in the Prudential Center. Such a great spot because you can walk around Eataly beforehand, enjoy dinner at a gorgeous restaurant, then top off the night with some of the most delicious authentic Italian deserts. Another perk is everything is indoors. The ambiance is perfect for date night and the decor is gorgeous so this will probably be a regular spot for us during winter. If you've ever been to Nomo Soho in NYC it's definitely very similar in appearance! They have a great wine selection and we loved their bruschetta.

4.) Yvonne's (Downtown Crossing)

This was a hot spot on our radar pretty much since we moved here but between our schedules and also them having about a month long waiting list for a weekend reservation, we were finally able to go this past weekend! I have to say...it did NOT disappoint. The decor is gorgeous--very 20's inspired and it definitely feels very romantic. The food was AMAZING. Our favorite of the small plates we ordered was the Honey Walnut Shrimp!

5.) Figs by Todd English (Beacon Hill)

This one was actually recommended by Biana and her hubby! This is another spot we have visited a few times especially while we have had friends in town. It's in my absolute FAVORITE part of the city near Beacon Hill and the Boston Public Garden so if you're visiting, I highly recommend making a reservation here but exploring the area before! Biana recommended the calamari pizza so we have ordered that almost every single time we've gone. I mean seriously...look at all that calamari! I also really like their red sangria!

Honorable Mentions:
Rosebud Cafe in Davis Square
Marliave in Downtown Crossing
Antico Forno in the North End

For cocktail hour...
Pier 6/Reel House -- grab drinks at Pier 6 in Charlestown then take a boat ride over to Reel House for more cocktails and dinner! Phenomenal views of the city.
Envoy -- rooftop bar with gorgeous views of the city and amazing frose
The Landing -- super fun bar right on the harbor but also best during summer/early fall (I don't even know if it's open during winter since it's completely outdoors.)
The Liberty Hotel Bar  --
The River Bar -- such a cool, eclectic bar with fire pits and cozy seating. They have a great Aperol Spritz!
